The Underground Railroad began in the U.S. nearly 200 years ago. It was “run” surreptitiously by Quakers, free Blacks, slaves and other Abolitionists to help slaves reach northern states, Canada, and “freedom”. The story goes that quilts were hung on fences and clotheslines along the escape routes while the blocks gave directional signals and other messages to point the way and identify “free houses”.
Traditional quilt patterns included in the Covenant Group quilt are: North Star, Crossroads, Log Cabin, Shoo-Fly, Wagon Wheel, Underground Railroad, Sail Boat, Bow Tie, Basket, Bear’s Paw, Flying Geese, and Monkey Wrench. The quilt is 51.5” x 67”, hand quilted, and made by 9 members of the Quilt Covenant Group.
