UUCA too can become a "Breakthrough Congregation"

On Sunday, our Rev. Carlton Smith mentioned three UU congregations that the UUA has recognized as "breakthrough congregations"--congregations that have achieved significant and sustained numerical growth: Portland OR by declaring its property to be a "hate-free zone", Summit NJ by giving $100,000 to community service programs, and Harrisburg PA by moving to an inner-city church property. These stories remind me of the "public church/private church" conversations we have been having over the past year or more. They also assure me that we are moving in the right direction with our capital campaign to make our parking lot more welcoming and accessible to visitors, and to expand our east wing to potentially accommodate more community-service outreach programming.

What about all of the older people who need a paved parking lot to be able to get into the church safely?  It is not feasible for everyone to take public transportation.  How are choir members who need to be here at

8:15 am on a Sunday morning supposed navigate infrequent public transportation?  Can we work on this?  Could we have a bus that would pick us up?   The parking lot is an accessibility issue as well as a practical issue.  People have nearly fallen in our parking lot.  This is not acceptable.

What I found interesting about the Portland congregation is that, as part of their breakthrough congregation efforts, they had a capital campaign where they built new spaces, which could be used by the community. How can our spaces be used? We are getting some good conversations in response to that question. And as I reflect on the private/public church remarks, I am reminded of the wise words of our Board chair, Natty Averett, who stated recently that we need to shift from the "either/or" kind of thinking and move to the "both/and" culture --- a culture of abundance and not scarcity. I think we are headed there. One of the other references in Rev. Carlton's sermon talked about a suburban church holding services
BOTH in its church, AND in the urban core of the city. Gee, we could do that -- have services both at our church and we could rent space near a Metro station for some completely different services. Imagine the possibilities. Both/And. I like it.

I love to hear you set high expectations, David, but paving the parking lot won't get you there. How about moving to an inner-city property? How about eliminating the parking lot altogether and everyone using public transit? Now THAT would be a breakthrough!!!
