The Rev. Carlton Elliot Smith, new consulting minister

I am pleased to announce that The Reverend Carlton Elliot Smith will be our consulting minister for the next two years, beginning on August 1.

Reverend Smith was ordained into the Unitarian Universalist ministry in October 1995. After graduating summa c** laude from Howard
University School of Divinity in 1992 (M.Div.), he attended the World
Council of Churches’ Graduate School at the Ecumenical Institute
outside Geneva, Switzerland for five months. The following year, as a
Henry Luce Fellow, he was a staff writer for Religion News Service,
then based in Manhattan. His articles were syndicated by the New
York Times
and appeared in newspapers across the country,
including The Washington Post, The Detroit Free Press,
The San Jose Mercury-News, and The San Francisco Chronicle.

In the fall of 1994, he began active pursuit of parish ministry, as a full-time ministerial intern serving two congregations, The Unitarian
Church in Summit and the Unitarian Universalist Society of the
Palisades in Englewood. In 1995, Rev. Smith began a two-year UUA
extension ministry placement at the Hollis Unitarian Church in
Queens. From 1997 to 1999, he was Minister for Extension and Outreach
at the First Unitarian Church of Oakland, California. He served
as an Assistant Minister at First Parish of Arlington, Mass., from
2002 to 2009. He is presently finishing an interim ministry at the
Paramus, NJ UU Church. You can find out more about Rev. Smith at this site: http://www.cucparamus.org/Default.aspx?tabid=68.

I want to thank our search team for their work, Nattie Averett, Bill Fogarty, Sue Browning, and Gerry Kittner for their work. We all believe Rev. Smith will be a loving presence among us and an excellent leader.

Rev. Carlton: Just wanna say here as before that I'm excited about your arrival. Meanwhile, Rev. Alma Crawford sings your praises in Pittsburgh. Joan Holm, a dear long-time member of the congregation who faces a difficult surgery tomorrow in Pittsburgh, emailed to say that Rev. Alma had told her about your impending arrival. Joan is hoping to make it to Arlington later this year or early next to sit in our new pews for one of your sermons.
