So what are you reading this summer?

Summer is my favorite time to read, and I've been enjoying some great books lately. I'm on a history kick, having recently finished "Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World" by Jack
Weatherford (did you know that G Khan advocated for religious tolerance, among other humanitarian efforts?), and now I'm reading Taylor Branch's incredible book series, "Parting the Waters: America In The King Years," on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (I'm on volume 1).

For pure fun I'm enjoying "The Dresden Files", a best-selling series about a wizard detective (I'm listening to these), and "Fortunate Harbor" by my favorite author, Emilie Richards (I'm fortunate enough to be married to her). I'm hoping to get to Greg Mortenson's second book, "Stones Into Schools" -- I loved "Three Cups of Tea" -- and "Dancing With Life," a book on Buddhist insights by Phillip Moffitt. And I can hardly wait to read Bishop John Shelby Spong's new book, "Eternal Life: A New Vision."

What books have you been enjoying, and what do you recommend?

The Art of Racing in the Rain is a quick read but you see a family and their ups and downs from the eyes of their dog. Of course, the dog cannot talk so you live in his head as you read the story. Some very interesting thoughts and points of view are to be found if you trust the commentator.

I started reading "Animal, Vegetable Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver after hearing her interview last Sunday morning on "Speaking of Faith". It resonates with Martin Ogle's sermon last Sunday morning and is helping to renew and support my efforts & belief in mindful, seasonal & local eating. Off to the Farmer's Market in Clarendon this afternoon with Shannon & Maura to see what's beautiful and available for dinner.

I'm afraid that the To Read stack by my bed, which is three feet high, and two books wide, is growing faster than my ability to lower it. At the moment, I'm reading these three:

Becoming Attached, by Robert Karen; the history and current status of attachment theory, which deals with how infants become human beings in relationships.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles, by Haruki Murakami; a complex mystery (maybe) by a popular Japanese novelist

and of course

Boards That Make a Difference, by John Carver

I could post a list of the pile by my bed, but that would be more than anyone wants to read!

I am re-reading Still Here by Ram Dass, a wonderful book about embracing aging. Has anyone else read it? June--- small coincidence...I just received House of Hope from the UUA bookstore! We will have to compare notes on our reading. I am also reading The Business of Happiness by Ted Leonsis, and the novel 1919 by John Dos Passos

Hi. Here's my current reading list:

1. Cognitive Surplus by Clay Shirkey -----there is lots of thought in here that is evidence that the non-churched population is ready to entertain UUism. Shirkey wrote Here Comes Everybody, another great read about how the internet's contribution to humanity is changing how we behave. But in Cognitive Surplus, Shirkey shows that human beings naturally want to share and collaborate and to NOT be couch potatos. And that for the first time in history, we can take the cognitive surplus that couches have kidnapped and held tied down in front of TVs, and transform it into a collective, exponential growth of human knowledge. He uses the Gin Craze of 17th & 18th England to illustrate how systems of social behavior evolve that address symptoms and not root causes of problems.

2. A House for Hope: The Promise of Progressive Religion for the 21st C. by John Buerhens and Rebecca Ann Parker. The authors, both theologans and UU ministers, talked about the book at GA this year.

3. Gilead by Marilynne Robinson

4. A Life in Poetry, by former U.S. poet laureate Donald Hall ('06/'07)
5. All of Carol Anne Duffy's poetry books. She's the current poet laureate of Scotland
6. For fun: The last of the Harry Potter series. (Recently in Scotland and drank espresso and munched on Tiffin - crumbled biscuits binded by, what else: chocolate)
