Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, VA

A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948

Every year the ministers preach a sermon once a month on a certain theme, and our covenant groups, as well as other groups and hopefully individuals, discuss the sermons. This year the theme was "Heaven on Earth," and from what I've heard, the sermons stimulated many fascinating discussions. Now we are looking for a theme for next year. Any ideas?

I'd love to hear a series about how we can change the world. With all of the tragedies and ongoing causes, the need in the world can sometimes seem overwhelming. We need encouragement and support as we try to focus our energies and make the world a better place - as individuals, small groups, and one big church. There are so many inspirational examples - from Greg Mortenson down to the neighborhood elementary school principal.

Polling is a great idea. Is there another application in our planning processes? Something the Board is up to and is interested in hearing from members about this Fall?

The sermon theme has been decided on. See the blog

Here's an idea: We take the suggestions here and put them in a poll. We advertise in Page 2 for several weeks to get people to vote online. Given it's already August, the sermon series might already be decided for this next year. But as Jacomina said there's likely enough interest in several topics to get covenant groups going. Does anyone want to get a read on that interest by polling here? It would be easy to set up. Thoughts?

The new science of the human mind: intentionality; decision; prejudice; sexism; sprituality, homophobia, and how the mind deals with these stumbling blocks to goodness and rightness. It turns out we are explainers rather than deciders. The mind triggers action before the "decision" is made. How do we weave the new findings of science of the brain into the age old efforts to be good, be altruistic, accept many points of view, make the gradual changes to enough self-knowledge to anticipate destructive or ill adapted behaviors (like anger, causing pain, etc., etc.).

I agree with Shaida and Martha - we should revisit or be introduced to the principles if we are new to UUism. It is important to fully live out our principles. How we behave does matter. How does our worldly baggage get in the way of fully living out our principles? These are important things to think about. If we don't know who we are - then who will?

I would like to echo Martha suggestion. I think it may be time to revisit our UU principles as the sermon theme. Each is written in language that can be read through so many filters, but what do we here at UUCA mean, for example, by equity, justice and compassion in all our interactions, or in the inherent worth and dignity of every human being? How does that manifest itself in our behaviors toward each other? How do we live these principles here, everyday? And if we are struggling with them, where are our struggles, how do they show up in our church life? There is plenty of rich material in our UU principles and in trying to apply them to our everyday lives.

I think it would be good to revisit one of the series topics that were covered a number of years age. Many people are new, the groups are new, and topics could be reworked to give a new focus. Any of the subjects like world religions, "the big picture" or UU principles would be interesting to revisit,

I like Cynthia's idea about the connection between body/bodies and soul/spirit. Perhaps this idea relates to Rev. Carlton's "salvation" theme. One might say that we are all deeply connected in ways that we can't fully grasp, and that we are called to behave as if that matters. Another way of looking at it could have to do with transforming lives in order to transform the world. (About Salsa, Soul, and Spirit: I have gotten a lot out of reading it recently. However, in my view it is too specific to serve as a seed crystal for a sermon series. I do support the idea of having a discussion group or covenant group of some kind that would focus on that book.)

I have heard the suggestion several times by now. Let's read the book: Salsa, Soul and Spirit together and have it as the topic for the sermon series.
If it does not become the sermon series topic, there is enough energy around this book, that a special covenant group may form or a leadership group may take it up like we read the Durall book this past year.

Could we start over with the first series, such as "The Big Questions"? Many people either weren't here then or missed being in covenant groups at the time. I don't think we need to reinvent the wheel every year!
