Scholarships for Mayan Students

Some 20 folks met on February 12 to donate money for scholarships for Mayan students in Guatemala.  UUA President Peter Morales's home church in Colorado started the project in 2007 and UUCA was

close behind in 2010. UUCA'ers together with PAG and the Youth Group raised $7000 for students who want to go to high school for careers in teaching, business administration ,and nursing.  Between the two churches, 30 middle schoolers and 20 high school students receive scholarships for this school year.

The scholarships foster self-sufficiency and hope for Mayans whose lives were decimated during the 36-year civil war.

The Mayan organization ADIVIMA administers the scholarships giving preference to girls.  ADIVIMA carefully monitors student progress and family commitment, and expects recipients to continue their ties to their communities.
