Guatemalan School Makes $1000 on Sale of Spring Bulbs

Last Fall, Victor Lopez, a Guatemalan immigrant from Toj Chan and now living in nearby Buckingham, along with PAG supporters Barbara Johnson and Maggie Needham decided to raise money for Toj Chan’s elementary school.  (Five years ago, many Toj Chan immigrants living in Buckingham sent money home to build this school; and, in November 2010, 12 UUCA’ers visited it).

Last Fall, by selling Spring-flowering bulbs to PAG members, clients of Andy's Lawn Service (an Arlington employer of many Toj Chan men) and to friends and neighbors, this team raised $1000.

The money was sent to Toj Chan around Christmas to arrive in time for the school year which began in January.  Supplies were purchased and each of the 84 children enrolled received books, pens, pencils, and paper.

And, there was enough money left over to repair the school’s kitchen and buy some basketballs, a soccer ball and team uniforms so the kids now can play other schools  The mayor presented the children with all of these gifts in a special ceremony.

Maggie, Victor, and Barbara want to thank all who supported the sale and hope you enjoy your bulbs when they flower. Congratulations to this small team who accomplished so much!
