On Saturday, January 21, Ada Lee Peebles was born - my very first grandchild! She's the beautiful daughter of my son Byron and his wife Elisabeth (Beth). I was present at the birth, which happened in the comfort of their home, with the skilled and loving guidance of a midwife from Birthcare of Alexandria. As she was coming into this world, the universe was celebrating by decorating the sky, the trees, the ground with soft and sparkly snow and ice.
Being a grandmother is a brand new role for me. So far, my heart is light, and my gratitude is boundless - for the calm wisdom of my son and daughter-in-law who are terrific parents, for the inspiring model of my own mom on how to be a grandmother, and for the privilege of having Ada in my life.
Ysaye M Barnwell, UU, songwriter/singer/leader, member of Sweet Honey in the Rock, wrote words that sing to me now -
For each child that's born, a morning star rises and sings to the universe who we are.
We are our grandmother's prayers!

I'm delighted for you, and your family, Rev. Dr. Linda, and for us all. Welcome, Ada!
What a lovely dream.. the baby singing songs to those who welcome her..
Congratulations to all of you.. all four generations on both sides, what a gift...
I wonder what my birth song would have been? I wonder whether we can imagine it with hindsight? What a wonderful ingathering question that would be for a covenantal group
Comment by Rev. Linda Olson Peebles on January 26, 2012 at 1:54pm Baby Ada is five days old. Last night I had an amazing dream, in which she was singing songs to all of us who had come to welcome her! We were thrilled and awed! It reminded me of an old African tradition that believes that the song a child hears when she is born, and welcomed into this world, stays with her all her life.
What songs do you sing to the babies in your life? I think the first song I sang to Ada earlier this week was:
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine,
you make me happy when skies are gray.
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you!
Please don't take my sunshine away!"
Comment by Barbara Johnson on January 25, 2012 at 9:09am Congratulations Linda! My son was born at home with Birthcare midwife Marcia Jackson, on a very hot day in July. Lovely image of snow greeting baby Ada. I'm glad you could be there.
Congratulations Grandma Linda! Best to all. (My paternal grandmother's name was Ada.)
