Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, VA

A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948

Most UU's probably support the right of gay and lesbian  people to marry whoever they want. Many probably don't know how important it is in many aspects of life. Being denied equal marriage rights can effect  Social Security and other retirement  benefits, Medicare, long term care cost and coverage, inheritance, immigration status,  adoption rights, and employment benefits including: health care, leave, financial assistance when a partner is disabled. The stories of people who have been denied legal recognition are heartbreaking, sometimes catastrophic  - not to mention unfair!

On February 14, Equality UUCF (Fairfax) and People of Faith for Equality in VA will be Standing on the Side of Love  in support of Marriage Equality at the Fairfax County Courthouse.

A lesbian couple,  both women retired Navy veterans who have been domestic partners for 26 years, will be filing for a marriage license. The event will take place at the Fairfax County Courthouse at 4100 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, Virginia.  Other gay and lesbian couples who would like to take this step  and straight allies who want to demonstrate their support will gather at 1:30. At 2:00  couples will enter the courthouse and  Rev. Mary Katherine Morn and Rev. Amanda Poppei will be speaking immediately afterwards. it will close with a candlelight vigil. Come and stand with us! Bear witness as we ask on this Valentines Day, this day of love, to be granted our civil right to marry.

In the next few weeks, I will be sharing some examples of the consequences of our country's denial of liberty and justice FOR ALL!  If you have stories or responses to share, I hope you will take this opportunity to join the discussion.

Hope to be with you on Valentines Day this year to Stand on the Side of Love!
Rhonda

PS we can carpool! Let me know if you will be joining us!

I will be at both events.  At the Arlington Courthouse, it will be a kind of celebration, since Clerk Paul Ferguson will receive the application (although the law still prevents him from granting a license).   At Fairfax, it will be more of a protest, since the Clerk there is not friendly to the cause of marriage equality.
