A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948
Perhaps you saw the picture that was widely distributed on social networks and blogs yesterday. It was taken at a federal hearing convened by Rep. Darrel Issa. This hearing was supposedly on "protecting religious freedom" due to the requirement in the health care law to cover contraception with no co-pay. All the witnesses were men of faith - that represented the "full spectrum of religious views" in this country. No women were allowed to testify in support of the contraceptive coverage mandate.
On Wednesday, the Virginia state legislation passed H.B. 1 - making VA one of a handful of states that defines a human being as a fertilized egg.
Also on Wednesday the Va state legislators passed a Mandatory Ultrasound requirement, which forces an unneeded, invasive medical procedure on any woman seeking a legal medical procedure (abortion).
What a week to be a woman in these United States.
As people of faith, we must make our voices heard on these issues. We must not allow one particular doctrine or dogma to define federal or state law in this county. We must not demean women to second class citizen status.
On February 23rd, UU's for Reproductive Justice will be co-hosting the Virginia Pro-Choice Lobby Day for N. Virginia. UURJ is partnering with Planned Parenthood of Metro Washington and the VA Coalition to Protect Women's Health to host an all-day event at UUCA. Activities will include phone banking, contacting your representatives by phone or email, public witness opportunities and networking with other pro-choice organizations and people of faith. Please register for the event at the website link below.

If you can't come in person but would still like to help, we are also in need of food and beverage donations for the volunteers throughout the day. You can contact Maggie Clayton (levyhlc1@comcast.net) or Elizabeth Fogarty (eafogarty@aol.com) if you can donate refreshments.
It's time to make some noise people...

Comment by Barbara Johnson on February 23, 2012 at 3:11pm Just sent the following message to the Governor of VA. Is there better language or argument anywhere, or does this hit the mark?
Governor McDonnell:
I don't believe any government has the authorization to say when "life" begins, as citizens have a wide range of thoughts and beliefs that should be respected. It would be wrong to have one particular doctrine or dogma to define federal or state law in this county. Finally, mandating ANY medical procedure in order to influence the personal decision of a pregnant women, is highly demeaning to women. I urge that you do everything in your power to stop these measures that attempt to confer second class citizen status on all women.
Indignantly,
Barbara Johnson
