A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948
Yesterday I had the honor of being invited to the morning reception and debut of a new video by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) at their headquarters, featuring Joy Cobb, Margaret Bauman and their son Donnell.
The video highlights LGBT families who have adopted children, and the positive impact these families are making in our community. It also "signifies the progress we continue to make in changing hearts, minds and attitudes toward LGBT parents, and in opening more doors to qualified LGBT foster and adoptive parents". The filmmakers also came to UUCA a few months ago to feature our church and Rev. Linda Olson Peebles who spoke about how Joy, Margaret and Donnell have been an integral part of UUCA.
Joy Cobb and Margaret Bauman aren't just AWESOME moms, but they're also heavily involved at UUCA! Joy is a long-term and wonderful Youth Group Advisor and OWL instructor, and Margaret Bauman is on the Board at UUCA. Donnell has been part of the RE community, and participates in our regular yearly classes and is a member of the children's choir. At the reception, we heard from Bryan Samuels, Commissioner of the Administration for Children, Youth and Families... and other leaders pushing to allow LGBT access to adoption. I had a great time hanging out with Donnell, who was SUPER excited that he could be there to support the HRC (he spent all night doing all of his homework, so he could attend). The film made its debut during National Adoption Month, and will be used to promote allowing access to LGBT families to adoption.
Take a few minutes to watch the video below!

Rev. Linda and Sana- it was great to have you at this very special event!
I cannot tell you how amazing it is to know we have a welcoming community like UUCA that supports us and all families like ours.
What Maggie said. I'm so proud of Margaret and Joy.
Comment by Maggie Clayton on December 1, 2011 at 6:24pm I am so proud of UUCA, Rev. Linda and Bauman-Cobb family! I am honored that they are my dear friends and such an enthusiastic part of my faith community!
Comment by Rev. Linda Olson Peebles on December 1, 2011 at 4:09pm UUCA is one of the stars of this documentary, along with the Bauman-Cobb family. After the screening, a number of leaders came up to me to ask about our church and how we support children and families. It was an honor to be invited to be in the film, and at the HRC event which highlighted their initiative to encourage adoption and foster care agencies to reach out to bgltq parents!
