Guatemala Expert to Present at UUCA

7:00 p.m. – Refreshments

7:30 – 8:30 p.m. – Presentation & Discussion

BRIDGET BREHAN, THE NATIONAL COORDINATOR OF THE GUATEMALAN ACCOMPANIMENT PROGRAM, is visiting Arlington as a guest of PAG.  She will give a special presentation about Guatemala’s current human rights situation, and the effects of international accompaniment in that context.  With many years on-the-ground both as an Accompanier and program coordinator based in Guatemala City, Bridget is uniquely qualified to speak to current issues such as the havoc wreaked on indigenous communities by international mining corporations, violence against women, near perfect impunity for criminals, ramifications of the recent presidential election, the role that accompaniers play to reduce risks faced by indigenous Maya fighting for their rights, and the relationship between ‘Sponsoring Communities’ such as UUCA and human rights defenders in Guatemala.  We hope you will join us for this remarkable opportunity.

Community votes on mining projects are risky, always requiring int'l observers.
