Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, VA

A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948

I am teaching adult ESL at Virginia Tech these days, and my students are hungry for American conversation partners. I know UUCA offers ESL classes, but my students are already studying full-time and don't need more classes. What they need is practice in actually talking with Americans. The students are highly educated adults from Saudi Arabia and Turkey, and the exchanges are really fascinating and mind-opening. Does anyone have any advice for me on where to turn at UUCA? Do we have a program like this? Or should I start one? :-) Thanks so much, Lori

Dear UUCA Friends,

I have been completely blown away by the responsiveness and generosity of our UUCA community over the last week or so as it zoomed into action to create the conversation sessions for ESL students that I posted about recently! Almost 30 Saudi, Turkish, and Chinese ESL students have come to the Wednesday and now Saturday sessions as well to practice English and get to know Americans. We are truly a welcoming congregation that I am proud to be part of! Thank you, Jacomina, for helping to ge the ball rolling!

Do check first on the existing program as it used to be the only level III program being offered in the county, meaning that this is all about conversation. Contact Char Buss and/or Ric Blacksten.  CharlynJBuss@yahoo.com or UUCAEnglishRic@gmail.com
