A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948
Yesterday Rev. Michael and I kicked off the Deepening Connection Series with a two hour session entitled “The Theology of Congregational Life.” It was snowy and icy morning, so many thanks to those who joined the conversation.
Our goal was to step back and consider the big picture -- what is it that drives humans to gather in religious communities? We discussed the role of congregations as a voice for ethics and values. We considered the core human need to find ways to express connection with the holy – the great mystery, and to express deep compassion for one another. We considered how being part of a religious community is tied to identity. And we began the discussion of what helps define a UU congregation - who is in charge of a UU congregation? what does it mean to be a relational community?
Michael reflected on how his understanding of UU congregational life has been shaped by his 39 years of ministry and offered stories and examples of how church meets our needs to grow spiritually, to grow ethically and to grow community.
This afternoon I’m looking at the easel sheets of questions boarded during the morning, e.g. ‘Are creeds ever helpful?’ and ‘How are ‘called’ ministers in relationship with the congregation? What is the minster’s role?’ and considering how these questions might be integrated into the series.
The next session of the Deepening Connections series will look at ‘The Work of UUCA’ (Saturday, February 18, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.) and explore how our congregation functions – Who makes decisions on worship? What is the free pulpit? What is the role of lifespan religious education? What is in the RE curriculum? How does the congregation support members in times of need (hospital, new babies, life transitions)? What social justice work is regularly done at UUCA? How are new ideas nurtured, prioritized? How is social justice work integrated into congregational life? And more…
What are your questions about congregational life at UUCA?
Hope to see you February 18!

Comment by jill herndon on January 23, 2012 at 11:59am I will miss this due to earlier scheduling. I am very interested in the conversation and hope that there could be a way to include some of us in through reporting in this Soulcial webspace.
