Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, VA

A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948

Years ago, at a tricky time in our marriage, Joe and I created an altar in the Mexican style, to honor the "Days of the Dead" in our own unique way--making peace with our more obnoxious ancestors.
It sat on the radiator below the south-facing windows in the dining room. There was our triptych mirror reflecting our own souls, flowers, candles, pictures of our ancestors, our beastly housemates, symbols of life, love and the spirit. It was beautiful and it reminded us constantly of the continuity and wholeness of life.
Today, living in Arlington, closely surrounded by Latinos, many of whom are threatened by governmental policies that discriminate against their basic human rights, I want to create another altar, in our Fellowship Hall--an altar for the living, and for their/our basic human rights.
IT IS NOT JUST ARIZONA OPPRESSING PEOPLE.
Today's Washington Post carries news that Virginia is authorizing local police to "check the immigration status" of people they have caught in "routine stops." NOT people arrested, just stopped: "Did you know your left headlight is out, sir?" "Ma'am, you can't walk along here--the construction crane is lifting heavy loads above this sidewalk."
I know those would be ridiculous exaggerations, in normal times, but what if you are a very anti-immigrant cop on an anti-immigrant mission?
It's time to speak up here and now--thank goodness VOICE has taken on this issue and that the UUA is focusing on it. Thank the Rev. Peter Morales and the two other pastors in Phoenix for their "standing on the side of Love."
Thank Walter Tejada for continuing to listen and speak out, thank Connie and Louise and Nancy and Julia and Chris and John and all the rest who attest to the importance of our common humanity.
Now how can all the rest of us inspire ourselves to stand forthrightly on the side of love?
Maybe it would help jump-start our spirits if we create Arlington's best-ever, most beautiful altar for the Days of the Dead.
Anybody interested? We've got 3 months to get organized.

Jacomina--
thanks for your comment. I was thinking that it might be possible (and good) to get together with folks from VOICE, Our Lady Queen of Peace, etc., who might also want to do altares. There could be some good discussion and possible leadings for other ways to join forces. Is this something you'd want to discuss?

I was in a VOICE meeting in a church in South Arlington last night... two small groups met, about 10-12 each, in Spanish, about what was attractive to them about living in Arlington and what was bothering them. All people mentioned that they loved living in Arlington, the multi-cultural environment, the great schools for their kids, the many resources available in the county, etc etc. All work one and many two jobs and have little time but they came and are willing to get involved in solving the neighbourhood problems along Columbia Pike. But there were also passionate stories about being treated as second class citizens because they spoke no or little English, about being ticketed by Arlington police much more often than Anglos (whether factual or not, that is the perception), and the frustration and fear about the future was present. Maybe a lot of beautiful altars are needed in many places.
