Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, VA

A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948

I want to thank all of you who contributed your creative and inspiring ideas for this year's sermon series. To go along with our UUCA theme for the year, "Renewing the Spirit," the series will be, "A Renewed 10 Commandments," and instead of creating new commandments the ministers will be reinterpreting and renewing the original ones. Here is what we're planning to do, though as always there may be tweaks:

A Renewed Ten Commandments

Sermon Series for 2010-2011: The original Ten Commandments were the moral imperatives for the Hebrew people for more than 2500 years and for Christians for 2000 years. How can these statements be understood and lived out by religious progressives in the 21st century?

Sunday, Sept 19 -- First Commandment: You shall open your heart to the Holy

Sunday, Oct 3 -- Second Commandment: You shall value people over possessions and meaning over materialism

Sunday, Nov 7 -- Third Commandment: You shall speak the truth with honesty and respect

Sunday, Dec 5 -- Fourth Commandment: You shall take time for joy and wonder

Sunday, Jan 9 -- Fifth Commandment: You shall forgive yourself and others

Sunday, Feb 6 -- Sixth Commandment: You shall protect and nurture life

Sunday, Mar 6 -- Seventh Commandment: You shall be faithful to those you love

Sunday, Apr 3 -- Eight Commandment: You shall be generous of spirit

Sunday, May 1 -- Ninth Commandment: You shall walk in your neighbor's shoes

Sunday, June 5 -- Tenth Commandment: You shall cultivate gratitude

In September you may sign up for a covenant group where you can be in conversation about these sermons. I hope they will help you in renewing your spirit.

Guess I was a little late with my suggestion, but actually it dovetails very nicely with this sermon series!

I really like the way this has gone from the "Shall Not" to "Shall". So much richer food for thought. Thank you.

Dear Michael and Linda--
Love what you've done with the commandments. Each of these so simple, but so challenging to live. Yikes. Thank you. Cynthia Adcock
