Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, VA

A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948

We're all worried about flu now, aren't we? I've been hearing from friends who have kids who have the H1N1 flu, and others who have kids who have colds, strep infections, and all the other illnesses that come with back-to-school. And now I've heard that the church grapevine says I have H1N1. I want to assure you that I do not. I did have a virus last week that knocked me out, but it was not any kind of flu.

So many of us depend on the church for our social needs as well as our spiritual needs, and the thought of a highly contagious illness like H1N1 spreading through the congregation is scary. We've heard from several families who are staying home from worship services because their chronic health conditions make them particularly susceptible to the flu. Each family needs to consider their own health when deciding to come to church. Please stay home if you are sick. Wash your hands often, use the hand sanitizers in the building, and avoid shaking hands.

This website is a wonderful resource to those who are homebound during the flu season. You can listen to the sermon, see pictures from the service and from church events, and connect with other congregation members. If you haven't been able to come to church lately, please add a blog post about how you are doing. We miss you.

Remember, when you are on this site, you are in the church!

There is an email going the rounds that contains some easy and common sense sounding ways to prevent the flu from "sticking" during first contacts. As I recall here they are: to keep the virus from taking up residence flush the nose and throat area regularly with salt water -- neti pot and salt water gargle; keep hands away from face; wash hands often and well (the co-op nursery school signs used to coach children to sing happy birthday to time themselves) and use hand sanitizers frequently (and I have alcohol rub which is cheaper but not socially agreeable); use you elbows or wrists to turn water off and on, and don't use towels to dry hands if you don't have to; get lots of fresh air; do what you know works to boost your immune system; and of course, stay home if you are sick, and be careful about visiting the sick and institutional settings with flu outbreaks. I am a Substitute teacher which puts me in constant contact with class rooms already exposed to germs and virus -- or I wouldn't be there in the first place. I also haven't had time to build up immunities since I go to any of our many Arlington elementary schools. This is a real challenge for me.

On the upside -- I expect it will be easy to get last minute half-priced tickets to the Shakespeare theater!
