A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948
I'm questioning my own doubts about our borrowing $1 million for the complete UU space renewal and expansion (especially the second story for the East wing).
Why? Because I've been told that the Buckingham community feels great interest in sharing that space—which would offer us a multicultural partnership that could help build equality and community. For instance, that space could become a home base for work on immigrant rights and economic justice.
I like that. It's a vision—a renewal of spirit—I'd support all the way. But then....
Another good friend questioned whether UUCA would commit to a long-term in-depth partnership. Or would the East wing second story just house or expand our own activities, using up all the space except for occasional fiestas and forums?
So I ask: Would this congregation support—promise—such a long-term community partnership for social justice?
A year ago, I said my vote on the capital campaign would depend on whether this church would become more democratic in its social justice decision-making.
We've made some progress on that: Now we have monthly gatherings and a membership role in setting the agenda. We still have a ways to go, but now people are speaking up and often being heard. More progress will come.
I think my vote on borrowing $ for the capital campaign depends on this: Is our church ready for a commitment to using our space for a long-term community partnership, as equals, working for social justice?
