Can I be quiet enough to hear
machinery hum
in kitchen and basement?
Quiet enough to feel
the sun, emptying through glass,
fill every pore in my face?

Today is Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year for Jews, and a time for reconciliation and forgiveness. These words from Isaiah, a prophet in the 8th century BCE Kingdom of Judah, are read in every synagogue on this day. But their message is for all people in all times.
