Empowered UUCA Youth @ Justice GA

I'm sitting on our delayed flight home with our UUCA youth delegation in awe of the actions we took and the results we got in the last five days of the General Assembly. Not only was this one of the best GA's that I've been to, but it was probably the BEST way to introduce youth to a GA. It's social justice and action components are naturally attractive to the young millennials in our group. As a group we overcame our trials and tribulations, and discovered a powerful force within us to make…

A Year of Social Justice and Youth at UUCA!?!

Attending the June 2011 GA this summer left me buzzing with energy for this upcoming church year. I'm also starting my third church year at UUCA working as the Director of Youth Ministry, so I'm more aware of the nuances of youth ministry and how to connect the dots at church.

Over the course of this summer I had the privilege of attending numerous conferences as a panelist and as a scholarship winner. I won a scholarship to attend the …

Someplace Like America

Author was interviewed on Democracy Now this morning, 6/10/11. They also played very moving Bruce Springsteen songs inspired by his work. Many people at the May 7 Social Justice gathering indicated their desire to work together on issues of poverty and economic (in)justice. This would be a good place to start.  …

The Right to Advise & Be Advised

OF COURSE the ministers have the right to choose their own advisers (as Rev. Michael urged to our Board of Trustees in February.)

WE ALL have that right.  [Disclosure: My social justice advisers include Sarah Munson, Barbara Johnson (who also advises Rev. Carlton) and lots of other folks.  I don’t always agree with my advisers, but their wisdom shapes my work.]

But that’s not so important as the context: the big difference between the ministers and…

Capital Campaign, Social Justice & “Participatory Democracy”

There’s been much excited talk about the connections and conflicts between the Capital Campaign (CC) and Social Justice (SJ).  For example:

•  “Will the renewed space bring about more Social Justice work?  Will it attract a more diverse congregation (more modest-income, darker-skinned folks?)”

•  “Will  the Capital Campaign drain money away from Social Justice, or inspire more SJ giving—maybe even enough to hire a full-time, paid, professional Social Justice…

$, Me, and the Capital Campaign

It’s early days for the capital campaign, and everyone couldn’t be nicer.

My momma taught me to Always Think of Others Before Self, and I try, but I’m running into a serious Catch-22 here. Help me figure it out.

Some issues are minor—like how to reconcile responsible stewardship of property with caring for the needs of people in our world. Divide my gifts 50-50?

That begs the real question for me.

UUCA is the first real spiritual home I’ve known in my 70 years of… Continue

Immigration

Did you see the article in yesterday's Post about the human cost of the oppressive immigration policy in Arizona? Here's the link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/10/09/AR2010100904406.html

I will be giving a sermon this Sunday on "Immigration: A Long Way From Home," which will be exploring the complex issues around our nation's immigration policy. Immigration… Continue

Special Film Presentation at UUCA for Indigenous Peoples Day - October 12

In honor of Indigenous People's Day the film "Roots of Migration", will be shown at UUCA, Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at 7 PM, Room 13-15. This will be the debut of a special documentary, filmed on location in Mexico and North Carolina. (A preview of the film is on the YouTube link below.)

What is October 12? In Latin America, it is "Dia de La Raza", difficult to translate, but having special, historic meaning. NGOs, advocating for human rights, have also declared this day: "Indigenous… Continue

Come raise your voice against hate!

Come raise your voice against hate!

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, is coming to Washington for their annual lobby day and “radio row” on Sept 14th and 15th, where an estimated 47 extremist radio talk show hosts will broadcast live from DC.

Join faith leaders from around the country to pray for an end to hateful rhetoric and the politics of fear that scapegoat immigrant workers, separate… Continue

Farmworkers' Prayer

Works for me:

"all we ask oh lord is to be safe from the rain - just warm enough in winter to watch the snow with a smile - enough to eat so that our hunger will not turn us into angry beasts - and sanity enough to make a justice that will not kill our love of life." (from TO BELIEVE IN MAN by Joseph Pinatauro).
I got this from a great book of labor movement posters, entitled AGITATE! EDUCATE! ORGANIZE!
