On Wed Dec 4th at 7:30, at church, the MSC we share what we have learned from the Discovery Sessions and survey, and for the first time, will share the profile of the minister we seek for our search. If you can't make that session, come to Sunday, Dec 8th after the second service.

What a fascinating tale these statistics suggest! I'll only add that I attended "Introduction to Our Faith" at UUCA last nigh, 11/13t. If my eyeballs are right, ALL of the attendees were under 40, and probably a good quarter of them seemed to be under 30. I think we are attracting Millennials. I also think UUCA is well-positioned to retain a good portion of these new, younger people. How? By our increasing dynamism, by our orientation toward the future, by our thoughtfulness and our…Continue
This is newly released Census data. How does UUCA attract the under 30-crowd?
The Board is holding its November meeting a week sooner than usual. We will meet Tuesday, November 12, at 7:00pm, in the Board Room at UUCA. Because we are starting at an earlier time than usual, the informal conversation period before the meeting may be limited. The meeting is open to all.
Here is a draft agenda:

Due the the rain we've been receiving all week, the contractors were unable to paint the parking spot lines in the lower level of the lot. We are hopeful they can complete this work next Monday. In the meantime, please continue to park as efficiently as possible and please be aware of the handicapped spaces.
You should also be aware that there are now speed bumps located throughout the parking lot. These will also be painted next week but are a welcome addition as…Continue

76% of those who took the survey strongly agreed or agreed with the statement, "I feel welcomed, encouraged, and able to be part of the church community". 80% of men agree compared to slightly less for women- 74%. 10% of respondents either disagree or strongly disagree with the statement, with both women and men of this significantly smaller population feeling equally not welcomed. 13% neither agree nor disagree with the statement.
What should be our "welcomeness" goal? Is it…Continue

These statistics probably won't surprise anyone: According to the responses to our survey, 41% of respondents 50-years old and older pledge $2,000 or more to UUCA. By contrast, 34% of 18-49 year-olds give more than $2,000. The largest category of giving for 18-49 is 'less than $250 per year' at 28%. Meanwhile, 12% of 50+ pledge 'less than $250 per year'.
The analysis of the survey continues. For those of you who took the survey, you may recall question # 20, "what is your racial/ethnic identity?" We used the U.S. Census Bureau as a guide to define categories. Overall, 94% of respondents describe themselves as White (not of Hispanic origin). However, when we look at age differences, these numbers differ significantly: For respondents 50 years old and over, the percent that identify themselves as white is 98%. For respondents younger than 50…Continue
Very exciting news: Mike told me today that they are going to do the final paving on the lower level of the parking lot and the driveway on Monday and Tuesday of next week (September 30 & October 1). Obviously this means they will be closed to cars and pedestrian traffic. I anticipate the lower level to be open on Wednesday morning. The driveway will remain closed during the…Continue

September 22nd marked the end of the field period for our survey. We still have to input some paper survey we received over the weekend, but so far, we have 520 responses!
One of the questions we asked on the survey was, "What leadership qualities are most important when screening for our next ministerial candidate?" There were 19 options plus an option for open ended responses. So far, according to the responses we have to date, here are the following Top 3 and bottom 3…Continue

The tragic shooting today at the Naval Sea Systems Command in the Navy Yard in DC breaks our hearts. People who work on behalf of our citizens and our government give a lot of themselves in the best of times. In recent decades this kind of service has included being vulnerable to violence. Our hearts go out to all those who have suffered from the deaths, injuries, and trauma, which have impacted people today at their workplace.
If anyone at UUCA is connected to those involved…

Early results of the survey shows some gender differences within UUCA regarding engagement with the church. When asked to agree on a 5-point scale, "I look forward to going to church most Sundays", 33% of men strongly agree compared to only 23% of women. Responses to the statement, "I feel welcomed, encouraged, and able to be part of the community" shows a 37% strongly agree for men and 26% for women. Women do score higher with the statement "At church, there is someone I can turn to if I…Continue
The results are still coming in from our congregational survey (the survey has been extended till September 22nd), and there seems to be a large differences between Newcomer and Inquiring Friends compared to Members and Friends associated with the church for 5+ years, as it relates to one of the questions. It turns out that Newcomers and Inquiring Friends are twice as likely to identity their "most recent prior religious affiliation" as "none", compared to Members and Friends who have been…Continue
We are nearing the end of our survey period and I have already seen some preliminary results. One of the questions we ask is, "Please describe all that apply to your faith." 32% of respondents in our congregation "find the idea of God meaningful", while 22% are "uncomfortable with the word God and other religious language". Only 7% agree that "reason and rationality should be the only standard at church". Meanwhile the #1 response was, "There is room in my faith for realities I have not…Continue

Today an email went out to most of us in the UUCA community, inviting members and friends to take the Ministerial Search Committee Congregational survey. As of this writing, 124 people have completed the survey. This is a great start! But we need many, many more respondents. With well over 1,000 in our UUCA community, we would like to get at least 50% to participate. In the 2012 Presidential election, 53% of the eligible American voters voted. Can't our beloved UUCA community do better than…Continue

The upper section of the parking lot will be paved this afternoon. In order to give it as much time to set properly, we are going to keep it closed until Saturday morning/afternoon. The driveway will open tonight and you can access the lower level (by the playground) by using First Place S.
Mike from Sully or Paul will be here on Saturday to open the remainder of the entrances.
Have a great holiday weekend!

The final step in the paving of the parking lot is slated to begin next Thursday and Friday (August 29 and 30).
On those days:
• The main driveway off of George Mason Dr. will remain closed
• Entry to the lot will be through the First Place S entrance closest to the church
• All other entrances will be closed
• Parking will be limited to the lower level lot (located next to the parsonage and playground)
It is very unlikely that the…Continue
