One focus that brings together many of our goals - COAL

One of my hopes for the Social Justice Empowerment Workshop at UUCA April 9-10 is that it will help us find a focus for our social justice activities that meets many of our goals, and uses many or all of our lenses (Diversity, Generational, Green and Relational).… Continue

Let's Make a Music Video for Haiti Relief: Join The Effort -- New Online Group

Update: Feb. 26, Friday. Anyone can participate by just showing up on the day the chorus rehearses and records. But first, before we move forward on this project, please got to the sign up form and fill it in. Zanygram blog, part 2

Lawrence Kushner, one of my great teachers in seminary, often said that the deepest truths sound banal when you say them. Also that no words can truly capture a spiritual experience -- that the best we can do is write ourselves a postcard that isn't nearly the same as being there but might help us remember, a little.

Today at the gym I was thinking about my grandson, wondering how he is doing in his new world, wondering how my son and daughter-in-law are settling into their new… Continue

Gratitude for life

One of my Facebook friends said it in response to the post where I announced the news: "this grandma thing is the best gig I ever had!" Just two and a half days into it, I already have an inkling of what she means.

Meet Ernest Quincy Moore, born Feb. 18, 2010, at 6:49 pm. Great heaps of gratitude to Sue Browning, who was in the office just after I got the news that labor had begun. She forced me out of my awestruck stupor, urged me to… Continue

Call to Action in Richmond on March 2nd is suddenly more urgent!

The politics around the Virginia budget changed dramatically this week, threatening VOICE’s goal to expand dental care for low-income adults. On Thursday, Governor McDonnell recommended massive budget cuts totaling $2.3 billion that the Senate and House of Delegates are now seriously considering. K-12 education and human services would be cut the most. Read the details in this Washington Post article.…

CHALICE THEATRE SHOW IS WONDERFUL

I urge everyone to see Once On This Island, which is very entertaining -- funny and sad in the same show (I'll admit it...John Bohman and Alison Sheahan made me shed a few tears in their parental roles). Get your tickets now!

"Pass the (Sunday) Plate!" - New Flavor of Organic Ice Cream

A little snowbird told me that shoveling is a form of meditation. I tried to replace the groans with "Ommmmmmm, Ommmmmmm." Didn't work. Instead, my mind wondered to thoughts of snow cones made with Amaretto or Brandy or Grand Marnier (the Italian Lemon Ice of my childhood doesn't cut it any more.) The chant changed to, "Yummmmmmmmmm, Yummmmmmmm, Yummmmm.

If you look at piles of snow as large buckets of ice, then shoveling really is an act of shaving - a shaving of the ice! Unlike ice… Continue

Pain, Fear, Aggression, Revenge & Forgiveness

Pain, Fear, Aggression, Revenge & Forgiveness

OUCH! Too much pain in my left arm and hand—a pinched nerve triggered by fear: I pull my left shoulder up and forward to protect my head against assaults of—what?

Top of my list: Family issues and “Race matters” at our church.

Last night we had a family fight among Joe, Cynthia, and our daughter Iris…

Leave a legacy that you have loved well and buried dreams...

These are two really corny thoughts about Valentine's Day..but, the world needs to be corny on occasion.

My first fragmentary thought about Valentines Day...

I love the song The Power of Two by the Indigo Girls. It makes me think of all of the ways we love each other each and every day! You don't get through this life without relationships. I hope I Ieave a legacy that I have loved well at the end of my days... What a wonderful sentiment!

2nd thought about… Continue

Call to Action: Richmond, Tuesday March 2nd

Despite the tight budget environment, our VOICE leaders have discovered two possible windfall opportunities to fund adult dental care in Northern Virginia.

Last Thursday, VOICE decided to hold a public action in Richmond on Tuesday, March 2, at 3:00 pm. While final details are being worked out, tentative plans call for car-pooling to a bus loading site along I-95, probably in Dumfries. We would leave UUCA at about 11:15 am and return around 8:00 pm.

The action has two…
