Joys of Simplicity

Simplicity is very liberating and very practical. Here is a "how to" article I came across today.

A Mission Church

I have been working in an interfaith capacity with other churches.

We all get used to our particular culture.

I get that the basic community need for church is just that -- how to be a gentle giving presence in some traditional ways in our communities.

But I have a ninety-something Aunt who told me in a lovely Southern accent "Jill you need to church-surf from time to time".  Her point was that they may all have something to offer, and if they…

My Dad is Dying

My Dad is dying.  He is leaving the hospital this afternoon for the nursing home and we have been told that he has five days to five weeks.

What happens in this community when a family is facing this loss?

Another gap in the social safety net and a reporting team

Homeless after leaving foster care at 18.

This link is to a nonprofit investigative journalism site that ran a story about children coming out of the foster care system at age 18 and into homelessness on the streets. Not just one or two, but hundreds and thousands -- and where they used to move into work and be self-sufficient, the current economy has shut off jobs to them -- jobs going to the 20-something (maybe) and the… Continue

Northern VA nest of quilt revival in the 1970' and since then too

I know that many people do not know that we are sitting here at the source of a major revival in quilting in the USA. I got on the wagon in the 1970s and have not left it since then so there is a lot that I take for granted that everyone knows. Just in case you don't know some of the history, there is an annual event that for many of us used to be the yearly kick off for once more designing a new quilt, connecting with any of the guilds that include more than a thousand members...you get the… Continue

Hi, Jill! Good news -- you're in Raleigh! Abr and I would be happy to help you with information or anything to get you settled down here. Our new Fellowship is not too far from where we live, at least in driving time because the roads are good. We live in North Raleigh and can show you around -- all types of housing available. Even, a new Whole Foods coming to the corner of Strickland Road and Six Forks Road! The new PEACE Fellowship building is in Northeast Raleigh and I don't really know enough about real housing there. I can recommend a real estate agent to you. Ask in the UUCA office for my email address, and write to me directly. --Joan

It's looking doubtful that I'm going to be able to make the session after the second service. I'm accompanying for a rehearsal for a musical event at the church and the singers have move the rehearsal to an earlier time slot. If it works out I may try to slip in for the session between services, but I'm accompanying the children for both services so I'm not sure if they'll need me in between. Too many things going on!

Where is the new property located so I can google map it, and see what housing is like around it?

Oh! You're thinking of relocating! Well, I live in North Raleigh and Wake Forest is not too far away, going North East. Actually, UUPF's new home is in between the two. What do you want to know? I'll be glad to help. --Joan

Hello, Jill! Thank you for being in touch. Always nice to hear from UUCA friends. Yes, Abe and I are very active in the small UU Peace Fellowship in Raleigh, NC, where we live. I had no idea, out of all the UU congregations in this Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area, that I'd settle into a small one. We didn't join until 2008, but when we joined we knew it would be OUR UU community down here! The interesting development since we joined is that UUPF got seriously into a search for "our own home." Since then, we've purchased property and a building in the northern area of Raleigh where we think UU-ism can grow. Abe came up with what turned out to be the way we finally could afford the move: self-financing. Members gave the Fellowship loans (at 5% interest), which added to the money that had been growing in a building fund since the founding of the group in 2003-4. Voila! We officially purchased the property end of August and will probably have our Certificate of Occupancy soon. To say the least, it's been an exciting time to be a member. I'm Chair of the Sunday Services Committee, and Abe has been superactive in finance and facilities. (You can't get House & Grounds out of Abe's soul!) ((And you can't get worship out of mine!!)) I'm not their minister -- they just take that bit of information as part of me (the Rev.) and we go on from there!

This new UUCA website is terrific! What a church! -- I still love it! --Joan

This UUCA website is quite a wonderful addition
