UUCA - A Good Place for Children!

As we begin to wrap up our year of religious education, we take the time to reflect on the difference our learning groups and community are making in the lives of the children, youth and families we serve. Part of what we learn when we ask people about what they gain from coming here is this: Our church…

UUA and Rev. Linda Locked Down in Boston

This image from the Boston Globe website shows Beacon Street on Friday afternoon, April 19.  The UUA Headquarters is at the top of the photo.  The UUA Board of Trustees were at their quarterly meeting, and awoke on Friday morning to find themselves in lock-down.

Beacon Street in Boston was empty Friday afternoon.

I was in Boston to attend the meetings, as President-designate of the UU Ministers Association.  As I was out walking the streets of Boston this morning about 8am, I became part of the…

Thanks to Our Holiday Elves!

This past weekend, UUCA was the scene of many elves helping us bring holiday cheer!

The Mistletoe Mall Children's Festival provided fun, crafts, food, and a visit with Santa Claus for more than 125 children, youth, and adults.  Many of the attendees were our guests joining us from Beacon House in DC and neighboring Arlington communities.

And once again, the 100 tags on our tress - for gifts from our UUCA Secret Santas to neighbors in need - were created by talented volunteers…

Calm in the Storm

The winds are blowing, the rain falling, and as the humongous Sandy moves over us, trees are beginning to fall, streets are flooding, and people are losing electric power.  Yet again, we are experiencing another storm.  May all find a warm, dry, safe place to wait it out.  The church is closed, but we hope…

UUCA Member TED Talk on Climate Change

Vicki Arroyo, a UUCA member, was invited to give a TED talk on Climate Change.  Check it out!  It includes photos of the UU Community Church of New Orleans, one of the churches our UUCA volunteers have helped restore.

Profile Information

How long have you attended UUCAVA?
In the early 1990s, while I was serving the Mt. Vernon Unitarian Church, I attended workshops, special worships, and events at UUCA. I was called to be Minister of Religious Education at UUCA in 2001 (candidating Sunday was Mother's Day, and I started work on July 1). My celebratory Installation Service was in December 2001.
What does multiculturalism mean to you?
Multiculturalism is that way of being that acknowledges who each of us is and what cultures are part of our selves. The acknowledgment of many cultures together lets each culture express its own unique qualities, neither less than nor more than another culture. Multiculturalism asks us to recognize and discourage the urge to create a "norm" or "dominant" culture that is a standard of comparison to other cultures.
What religion or spiritual practices did you grow up with?
Liberal protestantism (UCC) - childhood; existential wanderer, followed by Buddhism in youth and young adult years; UUism since age 30
Tell us a little about yourself/your family/your interests:
Dale and I have been married since 1971.
We have three young adult children, all still UUs, and my son and his wife gave us a granddaughter in January, 2012.
I was a home-birthing, family-bedding, unschooling parent. I have always been a singer-songwriter, and have arts and education in my professional background. I have worked for years to strengthen human institutions, volunteering and leading to support arts, educational, human services, and religious organizations.
Our extended family stretches from Alexandria, Woodbridge, and Front Royal,VA, to Pittsburgh and Ohio. My family works to promote to the importance of advocacy for and awareness of people with autism.
Most everyone in my family are graduates of the College of Wooster, as am I. Masters of Divinity and Doctor of Divinity degrees were awarded by Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago.
UUism is a focus of my own passions, helping people find their powers and connecting to others to be able to help transform the world into a just and loving Beloved Community. I want to help children and youth become full partners in our faith. I strive to learn and teach about systems of oppression that hinder us from being a multicultural community. Committed to helping UUism grow deeper, wider and stronger, I have served on the UUA Board of Trustees, the Journey Towards Wholeness Committee, the Ministerial Fellowship Committee, and in various roles with the professional organizations for ministers and religious educators.

Thank you for joining the VOICE Group Page here on the website. We are working to post materials to make it an easy central shared space where we can all have a sense of the history, see what is happening now and see where we are going.
