Midwestern Jello = a Cultural Dish for UUCA's International Potluck

Is the Buckingham/UUCA International Family Potluck, Fiesta and Talent Show on your calendar?  Always a big hit, the annual event is this Saturday at 6:00 p.m.  Bring your family, a dish to share, and be ready to enjoy the wonderful talent provided by the Buckingham community. The notion of typical cultural dishes got me thinking about what foods I remember from my childhood.  So I dug out my mom's recipe box (she was Swedish; and, we grew up in Lutheran potlucks) and discovered some wonderful…See More

"Thanks, John and Chris.  I came across great news a few days ago, that the Canadian indigenous tribes have voted to oppose the tar-sands and pipeline project.   I remember an Iroquois call for spirituality as the highest form of political…"

Western Nebraska and the Keystone Pipeline

On the pipeline, I (John) biked across Nebraska several yrs ago.  In western Nebraska's sandhills, a hilly area with long long slopes, you see many small lakes.  These lakes are groundwater -- the Ogallala aquifer that comes to the land's  surface.  Feeling a sense of the enormity of this absolutely pure sand/water aquifer created over millennia from precip that has run off of the Rockies and is thousands of feet thick together with the emptiness of the land (nearly no trees or shrubs, no…See More

Since Dec 2004
What does multiculturalism mean to you?
Experiencing customs/ideas of those with different ethnic backgrounds than our own.
What religion or spiritual practices did you grow up with?
Lutheran and Baptist
Tell us a little about yourself/your family/your interests:
We enjoy spending time with our two daughters and four grandchildren. We are from Nebraska and still have great love for the Great Plains and West. We drive and camp in our camper van generally every year to parts west of the Missouri River. Here, in Arlington, we are active with immigrants from Central America, garden (both flowers and vegetables), and enjoy birdwatching, hiking, and bicycling.
Why are you a Unitarian Universalist?
We joined UUCA because of the openness and community spirit that we felt and still feel here.

Immigrants need Power of Attorney document

Wendy's recent post and the Immigration Summit at UUCA highlighted the risk that undocumented immigrants can be detained and deported. Any ideas on how to help immigrants, undocumented or not, prepare a Power of Attorney to deal with their children, assets, debts, emergency health decisions should they become unable?

John I'm glad that you asked about when Habitat for Humanity will start in Northern Virginia. John all I can tell you is that I did get an E-mail not too long ago that repairs on the Perry Hall Project are just beginning to repair the foundation and that's what I've been told at this moment. John as soon as I get anymore updates about the Perry Hall Project I'll keep you posted.

Take care John.

Sincerely, David A. Hedges. 12/7/10
