Our Membership Challenge

Rev. Michael McGee has challenged us to grow our membership to 1,000 before he retires next July. This is no small undertaking considering that we are presently 900. Yet this is a vital challenge, one that we must take up if we are to continue to fulfill our mission. To complete the picture, we are 900 members and 400 inquiring and active friends. To reach our goal, we must both attract and retain newcomers and promote friends to membership. Why do numbers matter? Growth in membership is an…See More

Can you imagine UUCA as a Community Center?

As a “Community Center” the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia welcomes an average of 2,200 people a week!Leaders from First Unitarian shared their success story in a powerful presentation at Saturday’s Racial Justice Conference.  They explained that they subsidize dozens of cultural, educational, civic, wellness and spiritual groups, and the hundreds of people served by them, by providing affordable and centrally-located space.  “We consider our tenants to be Partners in Urban Ministry.”…See More

Hold this date for Relational Training: Monday, February 28th

On Sunday, January 30th, Natalie Fenimore reminded us of the importance of relationships and of our human need to connect relationally.  She urged us to meet in one-on-one conversation, to tell our stories to each other such that we might learn to trust.  She said: "We are renewed when we connect in genuine transformational relationships that are based upon covenants of trust."“Easier said than done!” you might say.  Purposeful conversations don’t just happen; they must invited, scheduled, and…See More

What about all of the older people who need a paved parking lot to be able to get into the church safely?  It is not feasible for everyone to take public transportation.  How are choir members who need to be here at 8:15 am on a Sunday…

What I found interesting about the Portland congregation is that, as part of their breakthrough congregation efforts, they had a capital campaign where they built new spaces, which could be used by the community. How can our spaces be used? We are…

UUCA too can become a "Breakthrough Congregation"

On Sunday, our Rev. Carlton Smith mentioned three UU congregations that the UUA has recognized as "breakthrough congregations"--congregations that have achieved significant and sustained numerical growth: Portland OR by declaring its property to be a "hate-free zone", Summit NJ by giving $100,000 to community service programs, and Harrisburg PA by moving to an inner-city church property. These stories remind me of the "public church/private church" conversations we have been having over the…See More

VOICE gives power to poverty

"For much of Washington's political class, the shocking news that one in seven Americans is living in poverty provoked not alarm but further debate about tax cuts for the middle class." (Fletcher, Washington Post, 9/18)Why are politicians oblivious to this outrage? Simply because the poor have no money and thereby no power.VOICE organizes people and money to speak for the poor and disadvantaged. Please support VOICE during this month's Share The Plate appeal. Write "VOICE" in the memo line of…See More

Learn about Community Organizing with Love this Thursday,Sept 16

The tough-love golden rule of organizing is to "Never do for others what they can do for themselves." The skill of organizing is in finding and developing leaders who will motivate disadvantaged people to take action for themselves. Organizing is relational work. People respond to the call of those they they trust, leaders with whom they have a public relationship. These truths apply to both the organization of civic communities and of faith congregations. That's right. We can use the tools of…See More

Q: Why do we need religion?

A: Because as we learned vividly at Auschwitz, our lives must have meaning.Rev. Oliver Thomas addressed this question in the Religious Forum of USA Today on Monday, August 9, 2010. I suggest you read his article at: http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/forum/2010-08-09-column09_ST_N.htmThomas has found that people seek religion for many reasons including worship, chance to experience community,…See More
