Namaste: A Two Minute Greeting From The Heart And Spirit

"This happened to me in 2009, and got added to my journal: "So, anyway, there is this convenience store in my building, sufficient for emergency supplies that you don't want to hop in the car and go to Safeway for. At least, I really…"

"Not sure what perspective you have, but take a look at Psalms 23, 34, 39, 71, 121.  A patch of selected parts of Isaiah might be a possibility (40, 51, 55, 66). Also, look at Matthew 5, 6, 11 and John 14. "

"A favorite of many people is Psalm 23.  The version in our grey hymnal is a very mice translation."

Need help finding a scripture reading for my mom's memorial

I'm flying out to Seattle Thursday to take part in my mom's memorial service... my sister emailed me the (draft) program, which showed up this morning, and I am scheduled to present a scripture reading. I guess there's always Ecclesiastes, but I wonder if anyone has other suggestions.

Profile Information

How long have you attended UUCAVA?
Since 2007
What religion or spiritual practices did you grow up with?
Protestant Christian (Presbyterian); I ran with the Quakers, sat with the Zennies and joined University Unitarian (Seattle) in college.
Tell us a little about yourself/your family/your interests:
I love music (listening and performing), reading, writing, and coding. I can get lost in maps. I miss the Northwest, and someday will be moving back to Portland. But right now -- "bloom where you're planted!"

Please test this link to a Google Docs spreadsheet for cupwasher signup. See if you can add your name to a blank slot!

Well, the background site software continually trashes my attempts to format my poetry into meaningful line breaks, so I instead encourage folks to go to my website (linked below) to look at what I have written. UPDATE: I've upgraded to Snow Leopard, and have cleaned Microsoft products off my 'puter, and am learning a whole new set of apps, so my personal website is UNDER CONSTRUCTION at the moment. Maybe I'll bring it back up this weekend (June 5 - 6).

And, since the top-of-the-page pane limits one to 140 characters (a la Twitter, for which I have small regard), here I will insert what is in my heart today:

What's in my heart today is the clerk at the convenience store in my building. He's a deaf-mute, so interactions with him involve improvisatorial sign language. I waited patiently while the customer in front of me bought three scratch tickets (good luck with that) and while standing there with my carton of half-and-half, noticed a little shrine to Ganesh, the Hindu elephant-headed god. So after buying, paying, and tucking my bills into my wallet, I saluted the clerk with namaste: "I recognize the god within you."

He lit right up. What a smile. And saluted me right back, in the same way. Then gave me a thumbs-up as I tucked my wallet in my pocket and exited.

Things like that can really make your day.

I have been encouraged to post a link to an essay on my website in which I recount my history, such as it is, with social justice activism, and discuss what might be called an ecological view on its place in the larger society. There are other writings and photos on the site as well, which you are welcome to explore.

Daniel, thank you for the Michael Dirda article on Foolishness. Here at the UU Ministers' Convocation in Ottawa, we have heard much from Thomas More ("Care of the Soul") in praise of knowinglessness, so I went back to reread Dirda's comments again. So very wise!
