A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948

Our Learning Group sessions are concurrent with Sunday morning services at 9:15 and 11:15. They run one hour and 15 minutes. Field Trips:Learning group outings are planned for specific purposes within a given curriculum as well as to enhance community bonding. When a field trip is planned, parents receive a letter and a permission form (usually by mail). Because of church liability considerations, the form must be signed by a guardian or parent so that the child will be permitted to accompany the group on the outing. Youth often go on retreats, or make trips to other UU churches, in the DC region, in Boston, or as far away as Transylvania. Inter-generational ActivitiesThroughout the year a number of special inter-generational activities are scheduled which give us an opportunity to learn and to celebrate together. These special times may include family potlucks, monthly Family Fridays for families with very young children, Thanksgiving bread-baking, Solstice, Working Together Weekend in the fall, Mistletoe Mall, Peace Oasis in the winter, Mitten Tree Service (on Christmas Eve), Passover Seder, the June Retreat, Ice Cream Socials and picnics, Peace Camp, and other programs which bring children, youth, and adults of all ages together in fun and fellowship. Social Witness and ServiceOur congregation encourages children and youth, along with their families and other adults, to develop a social conscience and to take action to influence change. Our young people help with Unitarian Universalist Service Committee Guest at Your Table collection, All Souls Thanksgiving food collection, the Secret Santa program, and outreach projects at a number of agencies identified by our church as fulfilling our ministry. The Fall “Working Together” weekend provides hundreds of opportunities for service. In addition, social responsibility projects are integrated into the curricula for all learning groups.Creative ArtsMusic opportunities include inter-generational and youth handbell choirs; childrens and youth choirs; the December Solstice production; Coffee Houses; a spring concert. In addition, music is used to enhance Chapel and Sanctuary worship services. For more info, contact the Director of Music Theater opportunities for involvement in plays and skits can be found throughout the year. In addition, the UUCA Chalice Theater produces at least one musical play a year, with roles for children and adults alike. Please contact the RE office to discuss upcoming production and acting opportunities. Other OpportunitiesMany of the exciting opportunities at the Church spring up and disappear as needed. The RE program tries to remain flexible and listen to people’s needs, crafting opportunities for families to get together around an issue. If you have an idea for such a group or activity (whether a short-term project or a long-term effort), please contact the Minister of Religious Education or a member of the RE Council. |
