Next Day Alliance Gathering: March 14 - 50 Years in Outer Space
In 1967 an international community of space visionaries successfully completed what has come to be known as the Outer Space Treaty. The 1967 treaty, along with 4 others that came after it, are the foundation for the specialized area of space law. Dr. Shaida Johnston, who is both an aerospace engineer, and a space policy/space law expert, will share her knowledge and expound on the technical progress that has been made in the realm of space over the last 50 years. She will cover aspects of space science, human exploration, and Earth observation, including societal benefits of these activities in space, how our Earth is changing, and what international space communities are planning in terms of future missions. Join us to hear Shaida offer her expertise and perspective - both hopeful and cautionary - on this fascinating topic.
Dr. Shaida Johnston is a long time member of UUCA and our resident 'rocket scientist'. She holds degrees in physics, aerospace engineering, and space policy. She currently works for Aerospace Corporation at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and is applying her systems engineering expertise toward the newest Landsat mission - Landsat 9, due to launch in 2020.
