Wednesday Quilters

We have moved from Friday morning to Wednesday afternoons to open up to wider participation. This is a casual "cafe" group where creative and over-committed people turn up for respite play and help finishing projects.

We play with fabrics and quilt blocks to make lively quilts for our friends and our community. We jump in with opinions and new perspectives on just what it might take to finish up a project. Our speed at basting quilts has really accelerated our creativity and completions and gifting. Just make sure there are enough of us and we can baste a quilt in about an hour -- no more all day on the floor for you!

Everyone is welcome whether you quilt now or not yet or just have a craft project you would like to complete in a group setting. If you are bogged down in an interminable project, come work your way through it with good conversation and people who will cheer you on.

The group is also a generous resource of information to people with a family mystery quilt or quilt top, researching what you have and what you might do with it to restore or complete it.

If you do not want to quilt and have an "orphan" project you want to give away for someone else to finish as a care quilt, this is the place. Care quilts go to the ministers to donate to UUCA members in cancer treatment and with other chronic illnesses.

This is not a Covenant Group. There is a Covenant Group for quilters, with member and project overlap to this one. Quilters are inclusive and enthusiastic about each other.

I have been getting calls recently about where to go to find what or who for quilting services.  We are a healthy overbooked group of quilters around here, and the occasional project just needs this…Continue

Jacomina and I plan to meet tomorrow at her home to explore adaptive ways to quilt while keeping a 90 degree angle for the body during post surgical recovery. I have just purchased a little slant board to use with a Singer Featherweight so we will try it out.

Message sent to group to see if we are meeting.  But it looks like a great day for a long walk before the February rains set in!

Today.  Jill and June sewing June's quilt top in a small space at June's house.  Jacomina, Suzy and Taylor -- and maybe Laura? -- to determine location for the rest of the group.

Thanks Suzy -- I had such a good time with you last year -- and picked up such bargains -- that I do hope to do this again.

One of my bargains was meeting  a longarm quilter, Mary Tims whose charity quilting fee is about $50 a quilt.  She did a KING SIZE quilt for me at under $100.00

Any quilter not here and in our groups is missing this!

The Annandale Chapter of Quilters Unlimited is having their annual auction on October 19.  It begins at 10:00 am and ends around noon.  There are fantastic bargains to be had from sewing notions to finished quilts.  All the money raised goes to the chapter to support their programs.  It is their only fundraiser for the year.  It's great fun even if you don't buy anything.

Their meeting is held at:

Sleepy Hollow Methodist Church
3435 Sleepy Hollow Road
Falls Church VA

See you there!!

Hi Natty -- glad you have joined us.  We are intact and still meet with advance planning --always have some tasks that are lighter if we do them as a group.   We will be meeting this Wednesday at the Church.

I have a photo to upload of the latest of many that Agmar Raymundo has made since our Spring Working Together quilting day with the Buckingham community ladies.  She tells us she has put so much prayer into it for the woman and children who will get it in a shelter.  I told her the tradition of African American "healing quilts", and that she has made one.

School year will be out soon and I will be more predictably free to be at UUCA on Wednesdays.  It is so helpful to have large spaces to layout quilt blocks and check the design with friends.  I have 3 waiting stacks of blocks to layout/sew/and finish off!

Cutting activity moved to Trudi Olivetti's house today -- the easier to cut through her stash while pulling fabric for a specific wedding quilt.

Cutting party Wednesday the 18th -- Trudi Olivetti and I are cutting out Star quilt pieces.  Everyone is welcome to join us.

The group quilting project below went well.  I connected with a UUCAer who wanted to learn how to quilt. She is a fast learner and has finished two quilts since then!
