Are we committed enough to affordable housing in Arlington- When have we tried everything last?

Please look at the article on page 5 of the Washington Post Metro section (today, Wed., Jan. 27) entitled "Fairfax panel backs affordable-housing plan" to see what is happening there.

The FX. county supervisors voted Tuesday to approve the "Housing Blueprint" with an option to spend $10.1 million more on next fiscal year on affordable-housing programs.  (Must be approved during budget spring budget negotiations)  Supervisor Catherine Hudgins (D Hunter Mill) said efforts will focus on attention to the most needy.  Top housing priorities include $4 million in rent subsidies for homeless families and those on subsidized housing waiting lists.

Last year, FX officials cut in half the "penny for Affordable Housing Fund" program, which devoted 1 cent of the real estate tax rate to buy or preserve low-rent apartments and other units.  The program has been credited with preserving 2200 units that might have been bought by developers.

are you coming tomorrow night to VOICE core team to start work, among other things on the research team for affordable housing for Col Pike. You are the expert among us.

Here is an article from the Arlington Now website, linking to the Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance Report making points that Arlington County needs to set more aggressive targets to ensure affordable housing.

This is good background material to prepare for tomorrow night's (July 27th, 2011) meeting at UUCA on affordable housing.

We have also downloaded the report and uploaded it here to keep it for permanent reference  -- see the attachment.

Here is another file from the Alliance that defines some of the basic terms that my mind needs to start looking at this subject.  This file defines "affordable housing" for our area and in the larger NoVa.  I really like -- as a substitute assistant teacher in the elementary schools -- how they describe the effects of not having affordable housing. And as a taxpayer and hopefully steward of our environment, I appreciate what is said here about the social financial returns of subsidizing housing and the tax offset from creating new construction jobs. For anyone who has missed it the hardest hit segment of our population in this recession is in the construction industry.
