When is the next Green Action meeting?

Comment by Reidy Brown on April 16, 2012 at 6:46pm

I just started a group to organize Rideshare/Alternative Transportation (with a focus on managing the parking lot construction). So far it has two members, and, well, one of them is me. I'd love it if the Green Action group joined the discussion as we try to figure out how to reduce our dependence on cars, now, this summer, and into the future.

Want to visit a Recycling Facility?
I'm offering the next in my periodic series "Where Does it Come From? And Where Does it Go?" this one is an Eco-Tour of a Materials Recycling Facility in
Capitol Heights, MD, on Wednesday, May 2 from 11:30 am-12:30 pm. I need a volunteer who has a van that could transport us to the Capitol Heights plant. We'll try to car pool. Please call me if you are able and willing, my contact information is below. Below is a modified version of the description from the UUCA Program Guide. Call me if you have any questions, and please register, I need to know how many people will attend. LG

-----------------------------------------------

Have you every wonder where your recyclables go after you take them to the curb
for pick up?  You should, since this is a part of our interconnectedness of
life.  Well, Arlington's recyclables go to a Maryland Materials Recycling
Facility (MRF).  Join us for the fourth in the series of Where Does it Come
From? And Where Does it Go?  The MRF we'll tour was converted in 2007 to accept
single-stream collection.  We will see the tipping and sorting area, view a
short DVD and have opportunity for Q&A.  This is a good activity for children 10 and above.  Please wear sturdy close-toed shoes.  The tour will last about one hour.

Location:  Meet at UUCA parking lot and car pool to MRF at 1000 Ritchie Rd.,
Capitol Heights, MD 20743 it takes about 45 minutes to get to the site. There
is a Metro at Capitol Heights, and it's about a 20 minute walk from the station
to the MRF.

Date:  Wednesday, May 2, 2012.  Depart UUCA parking lot at 10:30 am to carpool to MD.  The tour is from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm.

Cost: Free but registration is required call the office at 703-892-9061 or
register on the church website.  Go to the tab "Programs"  then "For Adults." (I
hope we car pool and need to know who's going and will notify the MRF about our group size)

Facilitator:  Lavona Grow.  Lavona has offered two Eco-Tours to the county's
Water Pollution Treatment Plant and the Waste-To Energy Recovery Plant and in this series offered a Green Circle session "Where does your energy come from when you turn the light switch on."  Also, has offered a session at her home called "Greening Your Home: Ideas and Demonstration."

Saturday. November 6 TOUR THE MOST AMAZING SOLAR HOME IN THE COUNTRY Go to 706 N. Ivy Street in Arlington. Tour starts at 9:30. We'll be touring the home and office of Scott Sklar, the founder of The Stella Group, Ltd. and previously for 15 years the Executive Director of the Solar Energy Industries Association. Scott's house and small office building are like no others - they are "demonstration labs," a place where you can see all the options for "going solar" or "greening" your house, and talk to Scott about what might make sense for your home. For the technical-minded, here's a description. Scott's house is virtually a zero-energy home. It has a solar water heating system and 1.5 kW of photovoltaics (PV), including .5kW of the new 'peal and stick' solar cells and a PV attic vent fan. It also has a direct-exchange ground-coupled heat pump for both heating and cooling. A separate small office building in the rear of his yard has 1 kW of solar photovoltaic roofing shingles, an advanced battery bank, a high-efficiency ductless heat pump, new double pane R-7 gel-filled windows and R38 insulation, a 0.5 kW wind turbine, a solar-driven DC ceiling fan, a solar daylight tube, and LED/CFL lighting. He also has a 5 kW PEM fuel cell for backup and peak power augmentation - the first commercial leased fuel cell in the United States.

Wednesday, November 3 - This 7:00 PM Green Circle will feature the documentary "No Impact Man", an entertaining, amusing, and provocative film that follows the Manhattan-based Beavan family as they abandon their high consumption 5th Avenue lifestyle and try to live a year while making no net environmental impact. It asks, can a person help save the planet without driving his/her family crazy? It's challenging but turns out well in the end. Come prepared to contemplate and discuss how we may live our lives in ways that are more sensitive to the web of life and possibly have more fun while doing so! Note 7:00 PM start time.
