Comment by Reidy Brown on April 16, 2012 at 6:46pm I just started a group to organize Rideshare/Alternative Transportation (with a focus on managing the parking lot construction). So far it has two members, and, well, one of them is me. I'd love it if the Green Action group joined the discussion as we try to figure out how to reduce our dependence on cars, now, this summer, and into the future.
Comment by Lavona Grow on April 12, 2012 at 9:40am Want to visit a Recycling Facility?
I'm offering the next in my periodic series "Where Does it Come From? And Where Does it Go?" this one is an Eco-Tour of a Materials Recycling Facility in
Capitol Heights, MD, on Wednesday, May 2 from 11:30 am-12:30 pm. I need a volunteer who has a van that could transport us to the Capitol Heights plant. We'll try to car pool. Please call me if you are able and willing, my contact information is below. Below is a modified version of the description from the UUCA Program Guide. Call me if you have any questions, and please register, I need to know how many people will attend. LG
-----------------------------------------------
Have you every wonder where your recyclables go after you take them to the curb
for pick up? You should, since this is a part of our interconnectedness of
life. Well, Arlington's recyclables go to a Maryland Materials Recycling
Facility (MRF). Join us for the fourth in the series of Where Does it Come
From? And Where Does it Go? The MRF we'll tour was converted in 2007 to accept
single-stream collection. We will see the tipping and sorting area, view a
short DVD and have opportunity for Q&A. This is a good activity for children 10 and above. Please wear sturdy close-toed shoes. The tour will last about one hour.
Location: Meet at UUCA parking lot and car pool to MRF at 1000 Ritchie Rd.,
Capitol Heights, MD 20743 it takes about 45 minutes to get to the site. There
is a Metro at Capitol Heights, and it's about a 20 minute walk from the station
to the MRF.
Date: Wednesday, May 2, 2012. Depart UUCA parking lot at 10:30 am to carpool to MD. The tour is from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm.
Cost: Free but registration is required call the office at 703-892-9061 or
register on the church website. Go to the tab "Programs" then "For Adults." (I
hope we car pool and need to know who's going and will notify the MRF about our group size)
Facilitator: Lavona Grow. Lavona has offered two Eco-Tours to the county's
Water Pollution Treatment Plant and the Waste-To Energy Recovery Plant and in this series offered a Green Circle session "Where does your energy come from when you turn the light switch on." Also, has offered a session at her home called "Greening Your Home: Ideas and Demonstration."

Come and join a discussion with MJ Schmelzer and Bob Olson of plans developed to date for making major environmental/energy improvements to our church's buildings and grounds. These include recommendations from the Architecture Committee that will be part of the capital campaign. We'll discuss, in particular, plans for the church's parking lot, building systems, the Sanctuary, and the proposed East wing expansion. Members from the Architecture Committee will be there to help answer questions and give a tour of the church and grounds. Contact: Bob Olson at bobolson2020(at)gmail.com
