Annual Religious Witness
for Marriage Equality
Tuesday, February 14, 2012
9:30 AM
WHAT?
Every year since 2006, faithful couples have gone to the courthouse to attempt to register their long term partnership as a marriage. They are refused. Minister, Pastors, and congregational leaders pray for and support these couples, and their friends and families come to cheer them on "I see it as an annual renewal of our vows," said one couple in 2011.
WHY?
Some religious voices actively workingagainst equality in Virginia are loud, but there are many other faith traditions whose principles demand equality for all people. At this gathering we will come together to raise our voices in support of GLBT couples and all people who are denied equality under the law.
The Arlington witness is being brought forward by People of Faith for Equality in Virginia and includes, among others, members of Rock Spring UCC, Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, and Clarendon Presbyterian.
WHEN?
Valentine’s Day, of course! The Arlington event will take place at 9:30AM.
WHERE?
At the Arlington Judicial Center – 1425 N. Courthouse Road, Arlington, VA 22201.
We will gather in the courtyard in front of the building at 9:30 for prayer and remarks, then head as a group to the Clerk’s Office.
Courthouse Metro Station. Metered parking available in the surface lot across the street.

Marriage Equality events Feb 14
People of Faith for Equality in VA has partnered with UCC Rock Spring and UU Fairfax. The Arlington event will be at 9:30 a.m., and the Fairfax event will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Clerk of Courts. We will advertise events in Page 2 and online. We will organize carpools to Fairfax, if folks want to go together.
Capital Pride June 9,10
We will organize UU’s for the Parade. Elizabeth has already paid the $210 Registration at lowest level. Fees are charged based on the number of paid staff, so if more congregations join, the fee will increase, but we will have more contributors as well. UU Fairfax will organize booth. We will contribute, participate
Budget 2012
We asked for $3000.00 mostly to publicize events including PFLAG support group, youth group, and special speakers. Pride fees and expenses, special event expenses are also included. Since we asked for $2500 for this year, and received $500, we don’t expect that we will receive anything close to that.
We may be able to use Google ads, social media to promote. Ray Sidney Smith will look into this
Banner Parade March 11 or18 (Part of Membership Sunday Service)
UUCA Equality does not have a banner, but Heather will make one for us.
Mark and Elizabeth volunteered to carry it. Rainbow MeetUp decided they would also like a banner. Gerda will make it and Susan Craig will carry it.
Rainbow Meetup-
Susan C. reported that 3 members went to the museum in January to see the Bayard Ruskin Exhibit. Although it was a small group, they enjoyed it immensely!
Advocacy Organizing
Rhonda has been talking to UUCF Equality leader Paula Prettyman about our mutual need for a larger group of leaders to effect change in N. VA than either of our groups have individually. We will endeavor to coordinate for bigger effect with Northern VA UU’s, People of Faith, a statewide group and Equality VA for political advocacy organizing.

Equality UUCA monthly meeting -- October 4, 2011 minutes
attending: Rhonda Buckner, Elizabeth Fogarty, Susan Craig, Susan long, Leah Pellegrino, Rev. Carlton E Smith (for a while)
1) Rev. Carlton stopped in, between meetings, to share information about the program with the Episcopal Bishop from Uganda who is speaking at UUCA tomorrow evening (apologies -- I don't remember his name). The Bishop is in town to speak at the State Department and All Souls Episcopal in DC; Bruce Knox, the UU-UNO representative, knows of our interest in international LGBT issues and connected Carlton with the Bishop. Tomorrow's program will include a video/power point about the Bishop's Foundation for Reconciliation, background information about the situation in Uganda presented by Albert Ogle, the Episcopal priest who is hosting the Bishop, then some remarks by the Bishop and an opportunity for Q&A. Rhonda and Gerardo have stepped up to coordinate the wine & cheese refreshments.
What: Episcopal Bishop from Uganda speaks about LGBT oppression
Where: UUCA
When: Wednesday, October 5; refreshment 6 - 6:45; program 6:45 - 8:30.
2) Bruce Knox, the director of the UU - United Nations Office, will be at UUCA on Saturday, October 22, 10:30 a.m., to speak about his work. All are invited.
3) Carlton will follow up with Rev. David .... the minister of First UU in Baltimore, to get further information about hosting the UU minister Mark Kiyimba from Uganda. His visit would involve finding someone to host him (room, board, transportation) as well as funding his airfare from Oklahoma, where he is currently a guest of All Souls UU in Tulsa. Not sure if there is adequate interest in the Uganda situation to host 2 speakers this fall; we will wait until tomorrow evening to gauge interest.
4) We are still interested in hosting some type of conference/program/event around the issue of GLBT youth concerns, anti-bullying program, parent advocacy education -- but have not been able to connect with Bill Briggs of Metro DC PFLAG to get more information (still waiting for return phone calls & emails). March is our target month for the program. Elizabeth will check the church calendar to see if there are any March dates available (and cross-check with Arlington public school calendars). If dates are available, she will contact DC PFLAG to see if there is interest in partnering with us -- deadline for a decision is October 19. If no from DC PFLAG, we might contact NoVa GLSEN or Equality VA. Elizabeth will gather information, share it via email, and we will decide at our November meeting if we will plan a conference in the spring.
5) Susan Craig will examine the Equality VA anti-bullying policies, which are based on enumerating what behaviors constitute bullying, and report on them at November meeting.
6) Rhonda -- has contacted People of Faith for Equality in VA staff person Cameron .... She has not been able to get in touch with him for the last week. Rhonda is waiting to hear back from PoFEV.
7) Rhonda had phone meeting with James Parrish, Exec. Dir. of Equality VA. Their priorities are: promoting their anti-bullying policies to school districts in VA, getting signatures for the workplace anti-discrimination petition, and getting letters to the Social Services Board NO LATER THAN Tuesday, October 11. Rhonda sent info to Equality UUCA with a link for writing letters; she will post info about writing letters to VA Dept. of Social Services re. adoption on the main page of uucava.org.
8) We would like to have a regular column/box in the UUCA newsletter -- "Equality corner" or something like that -- with info about our activities as well as "did you know......" facts about discrimination against LGBT people. Needed: volunteer to put information together and get it to Mary Ann Bolton by 15th of each month.
9) All are encouraged to blog about equality issues on their uucava.org pages, to comment on each other's blogs, and try to keep equality issues on the main page of the church website. Question: is there a way to create a blog on our EqualityUUCA page, that we could all contribute to? Question: how can we get rid of the Equality UUCA group with one member? Question: how can we get Equality UUCA to come up on the first page of UUCA groups?
10) Equality UUCA needs to connect with other UUCA committees, such as immigration, torture, green, etc. What is best way to do this? Make a schedule, or have EqUUCA members select committees to visit?
11) Transgender Remembrance Day, Sunday, November 20 -- discussed having some kind of information about it in UUCA newsletter and on website; also, would like to have a display or something visible on the Equality UUCA table that Sunday (reminder: we will need to reserve a table for that day -- we have tables reserved first and second sundays of each month). We would like to encourage the ministers to recognize TRD as part of the service. Can we create some visibility with posters about trans-appropriate language? Some kind of education? Here is a link from UUA about resources for TRD:
http://www.uua.org/documents/aw/110921_news.pdf
Leah will check out the resources available through UUA, and contact the group by email if she finds anything inspiring that calls the group to action before next meeting, Tuesday, November 1.
12) We agreed to share information between meetings via email group.

Participants will engage in a "table reading" of the play (no acting experience necessary) plus a stimulating discussion accompanied by a festive snack and an opportunity to socialize.
* Film showing and discussion of "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin"--Friday, October 14th 7:15 to 9:30 PM
$5 charge/refreshments provided
"A master strategist and tireless activist, Bayard Rustin is best remembered as the organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, one of the largest nonviolent protests ever held in the United States. He brought Gandhi's protest techniques to the American civil rights movement, and helped mold Martin Luther King Jr. into an international symbol of peace and nonviolence. Despite these achievements, Rustin was silenced, threatened, arrested, beaten, imprisoned and fired from important leadership positions, largely because he was an openly gay man in a fiercely homophobic era. Five years in the making and the winner of numerous awards, BROTHER OUTSIDER presents a feature-length documentary portrait, focusing on Rustin's activism for peace, racial equality, economic justice and human rights."

Equality UUCA Meeting -- Tuesday, August 2, 7:30 - 9 pm
At the July meeting, we decided that we will be most effective if we choose one action area for the year ahead. We chose 3 topics for further study: needs of area GLBTQ youth/addressing bullying; marriage equality in VA and US; and supporting/standing in solidarity with GLBTQ in countries, such as Uganda, where they are under attack. We divided into study groups: Mark and Leah will look into marriage initiatives; Elizabeth, Susan, Janice and Gerda will look into youth issues; Bernie learning more about the work of UU-UNO on GLBT issues.
At the August meeting, we hope to decide the action area -- or at least get closer to deciding! Study groups will report on issues and how they might translate into Equality UUCA action. YOU are invited to discuss and vote!

Here is a chance to stand on the side of love for equality and support DOMA repeal!
From PFLAG National:
As some of you may already know, the first ever DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) Repeal Hearing is scheduled for July 20 @ 10 am in Dirksen Senate Building, Room 226 (1st & C Street, NE, Washington, DC 20510) . Members from the Senate Judiciary Committee plan to assess the impact of DOMA on American families. They will also address proposed legislation S. 598, the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill introduced by Senator Diane Feinstein that currently has 27 co-sponsors and would effectively repeal DOMA by allowing the U.S. federal government to provide benefits to married same-sex couples living in the 6 states (and the District of Columbia) that recognize marriage equality.
It’s our goal to pack the room with as many LGBT individuals, families and allies as possible. In order to accomplish this goal, there are a few things you can do to help ensure a successful hearing:
Please take action today and help move equality forward for all of our families.
Many thanks,
Rhodes

Elizabeth reported that the first UUCA Metro DC PFLAG Support Group meeting was a success. Future meetings are planned for the 2nd Sunday of each month from 3 to 4:30 PM. The Youth Group will begin next month. The two groups will meet separately but simultaneously at UUCA.
Volunteer Greeters are needed to welcome attendees and serve to make it a safe space (especially for the youth) by being present and aware of activity during the meeting time. Volunteers are needed second Sunday from 2:30 to 5 (or earlier if the groups leave close to ending time) PM, We will need PFLAG buttons for the volunteers for easier identification. Contact Elizabeth to volunteer.
We will request assistance, volunteers, etc. on the Church "EQUALITY" website and listserve. We want a motto: "UUCA makes a place to talk."
It was suggested that "WW" is an old fashion name. The group brainstormed and renamed it the UUCA Rainbow Meetup Group. Kickoff will be after the Pride Festival in June with a brunch on June 26. All are welcome from within UUCA and we will have a flyer at Pride Festival to encourage newcomers for that day.
We are recruiting members to help staff our table in the fellowship hall before and after the Pride Festival. We plan to have a table every Second Sunday after both services (at a minimum). The table will provide information on EQUALITY UUCA activities and schedules as well as on the Pride Parade and the Pride Festival. The table material could alternately focus on WW social activities and on Equality Advocacy issues in the congregation and elsewhere. We need to recruit volunteers to fill the "table schedule".
We agreed that in anticipation of Pride month we need an attention getting message for the Congregation. After discussion it was decided that fun facts would get a lot of attention in the form of "Did You Know?" This could be used on our website, The Arlingtarian, Page 2, card handouts or table cards.
It was also suggested that we try to have a "round, coffee" table to promote/allow new GBLT socializing in the Fellowship Hall [some logistical issues need to be discussed further]. Marc said he would look into it and look at recruiting to get "coffee table folks".
Gerda has added "Pride" flag stickers to the badges of UUCA Greeters and Ushers.
Elizabeth reported that we have increased UU "Pride Festival" participation in recent weeks, with more money and support. We have collected about $850. There will be 12 UU Congregations involved this year. We need a volunteer to coordinate with the others on the UU Booth at the Festival on June 13.
We would like UUCA tee shirts for participants. As a fallback, we will make do with the blue or yellow "Standing on the Side of Love" tee shirts available from UUA. We do need a Congregational EQUALITY UUCA tee shirt
The give-aways this year will be leis with the 7 Principles attached and, of course brochures from the congregations and their equality organizations.
We still need volunteer workers to work on a brochure as well as staffing for the booth table.
Rhonda provided a brief report on The "Share the Plate" review effort. In anticipation of the request from the Implementation Task Force for recommendations for worthy groups the meeting discussed candidate groups and expressed support for 2: DC PFLAG and Equality Virginia. The first for service [especially to youth] and the second for advocacy. We will poll our members for their input. EQUALITY UUCA needs to coordinate with the 2 organizations to assure their participation and also to coordinate advocacy campaigns with Equality VA.
Rhonda and Elizabeth suggested that we plan to have a second, monthly meeting by SKYPE 2, weeks after the first Tuesday, unless it is not needed. Specifically, it was felt that with the efforts of June coming, a second meeting would be necessary in May. This was received very favorably. It was suggested that agendas be made available before SKYPE meetings.
DADT Follow- up
Elizabeth discussed getting on Rep Moran's schedule to deliver the Signature Scroll, then having the Senators or staffers tie-in once the date was set. This was felt to be a good strategy. There was cautious discussion of the issues of using the DADT funeral mailing list. That will require further examination and discussion.
"What will EQUALITY UUCA do as a follow up for Church year 2012?" was posed. Advocacy regarding DOMA, ENDA, and Commonwealth limits on adoption, employment discrimination, were thrown out and discussed. Possible ties to liberal religions, coordination with Equality Virginia, and other tactics. We need to examine the issues and make a presentation to more members on alternative advocacy issues and strategies. Perhaps we could have a multi-congregation forum and invite Equality Virginia to participate? We will devote more time to this next month. Come with your thoughts!

Okay --
I'm 24 hours behind schedule, everyone, because I lost my computer's functionality for a day.
I'm revising the invitation now, taking into consideration the requests and suggestions from Carlton and Rhonda and Ray. I will create two alternative versions for y'all to discuss and vote on Tuesday.
Re Rhonda's important "Trans" question: This is the most controversial pieces of unfinished business-- the DADT repeal bill says nothing about Trans people, and neither did DADT. I don't know the details, but I'm pretty sure discrimination based on gender identity will remain legal in the military and will have to be addressed separately.
OK, I"m late, but only by 1/2 an hour - I should be in bed by now!
Outside: delete "come"
Inside: Is this the invite for outside folks (since we say "join the members and clergy" ? and in addition to advocates, we want to thank our representatives who voted (even if they don't come, we'll have cards(poster board size) for guests to sign, I hope. Also, I'm still stuck on having "New Orleans style funeral celebration of DADT on the cover- can we talk about it on tuesday - or is there a reason you don't want to have the word funeral on the cover? I think it's the draw! finally, are Trans people left out of this law- or are they just considered the gender they assume?
Thanks
rhonda
