Our group page picture above is from the UUA Mosaic Project Report. “This document brings the issues of young People of Color from invisibility to a bold sense of urgency and action. Set in the context of electing the first President of Color of the United States, the reader gets historical insight into why and how the issues of "race" and ethnicity is shaping not only their lives, but the future of Unitarian Universalism. It is a gripping, must-read document for any person working responsibly to build a multi-racial, multicultural congregation and community.”

Chimamanda Adichie: The danger of a single story

Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.

A time sensitive invitation from David Garcia:

Since I fall into the Generation "X" population, I regularly attend the weekly UUCA FX Service (Fellowship "X"). It is mostly a reflective hour dedicated to a variety of spiritual and life topics. On Friday, September 16 at 8:00 pm. I will be leading the service entitled "Getting Comfortable with the Uncomfortable: A Fresh Approach To Race". In the spirit of diversity, the FX group is warmly inviting anyone who wishes to attend in hopes of getting more inter-generational perspectives on this moral topic. We meet in the lower level Chapel and afterwards enjoy a meal/drinks at a nearby location as an option for those wishing to continue the conversation.

I hope you consider this invitation and look forward to seeing some of you there. Kind regards, David Garcia

Calling all supporters of A Dialogue on Race and Ethnicity (ADORE):

We need a new leader to get ADORE's monthly meetings going again. I will be glad to help in the process, but I have changed positions at my fulltime job and it is now much more demanding, so I cannot continue to be the lead member of ADORE. I'd like to see us have a meeting of all folks who are interested in seeing a revival of ADORE in our congregation, so that whoever takes on this task (yes it can be more than 1 person) will be guided by our common vision and goals.)

Do you want to see this happen? Do you want input into the process? If so, please use this comments section of ADORE's page to indicte that. Please share your thoughts and suggestions to move this process along. Thank you.

HEARING ON SECURE COMMUNITIES DEPORTATION PROGRAM -

UUs INVITED TO FAITH RESPONSE

On Wednesday, August 24 from 6:00-8:00 PM, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will hold a community hearing in Arlington County on the Secure Communities Program. Last year, the Arlington County board led the way in opting out of the program and was followed by states including New York, Illinois and Massachusetts. Yet earlier this month, ICE decided to rescind any existing agreements with states and declare that participation is mandatory nationwide. In a recent report by the USCCB, the Catholic bishops’ position stated that Secure Communities should be “frozen until meaningful changes to the program are made,” and that it does not believe the program “can or should be expanded to every jurisdiction nationwide” because it “would represent a disregard for the very real and human damage the program has caused.” Faith communities in Arlington are organizing a response at this hearing. If you are interested in taking part on Wednesday evening, please contact Greg Staff at 703-979-5580 or gstaff@olqpva.org and he will keep you updated, particularly regarding the yet to be determined location of the hearing.

I just got back from the youth choir's mission trip in New Orleans and read this message. I used to facilitate conflict resolution groups for youth w/ misdemeanors in collaboration with OAR when I was in grad school. It's an important program and I echo the support already shown. :)

Let me also add my voice of those saying that OAR certainly deserves our support. One of my colleagues at George Washington University is very active on their board. They do great work with a population that encounters serious barriers to reintegration. Laura, thanks for letting us know about this fundraising event.
Bill Fogarty Comment by Bill Fogarty on April 20, 2011 at 9:50pm
Just last week I had a chance to visit with the OAR staff at their offices (right after a Sheriff's tour of the Arlington jail).  OAR does tremendously important work -- they are very deserving of our support.  Among other things, I came away with a better awareness of the interplay of so many issues -- the need for housing, for jobs, and for health care (especially mental health services) -- affecting those released from prison.
Laura Dely Comment by Laura Dely on April 20, 2011 at 11:19am

Our crimminal justice system is one of the most glaring examples of racial injustice in our country. Offenders Aid and Restoration group (OAR), is one group that addresses the situation by working with incarcerated individuals to improve their skills and provide a network that helps them connect to family and employment.

Below are details about OAR's upcoming fundraising breakfast. Please come and learn more about OAR's work right here in Arlington.

Best--

Laura Dely
