Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, VA

A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948

To whom is one speaking when answering the question
"Who or what is in your heart today?"
If to Others, it should be something wise or pertinent or noble
or at least understandable. If to oneself, it should be the TRUTH.
But the TRUTH is so precious, so fleeting, so personal.
Why put it out there?

Because the truth is so precious?
To clarify, I mean that for some, the truth is too precious not to share. Your truth is a gift.
Hi Judy. Good question! It's just a suggestion, a prompt to stimulate a thought of the moment to update your status line with. We can change it to anything we want. You can write whatever you want. Give "xxx is in my heart" is a phrase we hear often in services, my thinking was it was a nice way to get in touch with yourself. To take a second out to pay attention to what is going on inside. That's all. There was a default sentence in the status box that was very cold and didn't sound like a church sentiment. I can't even remember what it was. But I'm happy to change it. I'm glad you're asking! What are your thoughts on this?
Why put it out there ... well, that could be a personal question too, couldn't it? There could be as many answers as there are people asking. Here's one answer from one person: the man Jesus, who said, according to the Gospel of Thomas: "If you bring forth what is within you, what is within you will set you free. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what is within you will destroy you." For introverts (like me, btw), "bringing forth" can entail quite a bit of effort and sometimes discomfort. Yet keeping it all inside can make us feel diminished, while sharing more of who we are -- in all kinds of ways -- can help us be more connected. True human connection is what we are here for, I believe.

Does this technology foster true human connection? Only if we bring ourselves to it. I have just spent a few minutes feeling delightfully connected to you, Judy, by responding thoughtfully to a question you thoughtfully posed. When I write something with another person in mind, it is like prayer! -- an unmitigated good for my soul, perhaps also the creation of good Karma in the world. I'm grateful for the provocative question, and grateful for this website as another way we can connect.
Thank you, Mary, Becca and June.
I will go put something true on my page.
Judy
Dear Judy--Thank you for raising the question. I am appreciating getting to know you, friend.
