Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, VA

A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948

What to do? There are two district-wide events in October that will engage UUs in making racial justice real. The question is which one to attend.

The Oct. 7-9 Jubilee workshop in Philadelphia develops a shared analysis of race as it affects all of us. Skillful and profound trainers, Dr. Leon Spencer and Jyaphia Cristos-Rogers lead this intensive weekend of learning.

All ages are welcome when UUCA hosts the Joseph Priestley District’s 7th Annual Racial Justice Conference October 14-15, 2011:

The Journey to Multi-racial, Multi-cultural, Multi-generational Community

The Power of Multi-racial Multi-cultural Community PARTNERSHIPS

How Interfaith and Community Partnerships have Changed JPD Congregations

MUSIC, CELEBRATION AND PROGRAMMING FOR ALL AGES

Thanks for the announcements Barbara. I would like to note for folks that Jubilee II is a weekend-long workshop/retreat centered around confidential, small and medium-sized faciliated group conversation designed to allow people to explore racial dynamics in society, in their congregations and their own lives from a personal perspective.

The racial justice conference includes worship, panels and other activities that involve a larger group of people and focuses much more on discussion about current actions and immediate next steps in creating and sustaining  organizational change for multicultural, anti-racist, inclusive community within UU congregations and the UU movement.

I hope folks will not see these two opportunities as conflicting appointments, particularly because they do not actually occur at the same time and particularly because one of the best ways to practice multicultural thinking is to move away from either/or, zero-sum and this or that thinking. I hope that they will find themselves inspired to jump in on one or both opportunities to advance our Strategic Plan's goal of having all lay leaders participate in training that builds multicultural leadership skils and our own congregation's and the UUA's member-adopted visions of diverse religious community that we are all a part of creating. The  "October Dilemma" might be better phrased as "Two Opportunities for You to Participate in Our Multicultural Present and Future." Speaking of acknowledging when the future is already here, the racial justice conference will include programming specifically designed for youth and children.
