Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, VA
A diverse, welcoming community of open hearts and minds since 1948
Sunday, September 18 from 12:30 – 2:30 on the Terrace at UUCA
Come grab a burger, hot dog, or veggie treat and learn more about our upcoming Peace Programs. In addition to providing information about the upcoming Creating Peace: Recipes for Active Lives series and Practicing Peace Covenant Group, we will also be announcing our Peace Leadership Program.
Peace Leadership Program
Our initial leadership program is open to youth and young adults ages 12 and up. Our focus will be on providing the tools, training, experience, and job opportunities for those committed to being a Peace Maker. We also have openings for adults to serve as mentors and to help with outreach.
Practicing Peace Covenant Group
Beginning Wednesday, September 28, at 7:30 p.m., and continuing on the fourth Wednesday through May, this covenant group is a continuation of a conversation begun in 2010/11 about making the practice of peace a daily part of our lives. We will use a common text to ground us. Under consideration are two books by Quaker author and teacher, Parker Palmer: “The Active Life” and “A Hidden Wholeness,” respectively. The book chosen along with a study guide with questions will be available by mid-September.
Creating Peace: Recipes for Active Lives
Introductory discussion session, Tuesday, October 4, at 7:30 p.m. In 2010, the Unitarian Universalist Association published its Statement of Conscience entitled “Creating Peace”. The statement was the product of several years of study. Addressing peace as a “moral responsibility,” the statement expands on the meaning of that commitment; provides historical and theological context, and includes calls to action. The UUA website includes a link to the Statement of Conscience. http://www.uua.org/statements/statements/13394.shtml UUCA’s annual Peace Camp for children has provided a practice ground for young people to explore ways of expressing peaceful responses and solutions to real life problems. The sessions in this series will provide older youth and adults, including parents, with information and tools for peace practice and leadership. In addition to “how to” information and practice, sessions providing historical context will be included. There will be a variety of presenters. More information will be provided October 4.
Hope you can attend any or all!
